Salah Abdal-Sabur is a famous Egyptian poet and dramatist. His first play, Ma'sat El-Hallaj (The Tragedy of Hallaj, 1967), proved far more stage worthy in characterization and language than the work of previous poetic dramatists. The crucifixion of the tenth-century mystic of the title became a powerful metaphor for the troubled relation between contemporary intellectuals and the political authorities.
