The story is told from the point of view of Death, who narrates the story of Liesel Meminger a 9 year old, having become interested in her after she encounters him three times. Set in 1939 Nazi Germany where Death has never had so much work to do. Liezel lives with her foster family, her parents were taken to a concentration camp. Liezel steals books. This is her story and the story of the inhabitants of her street when bombs started falling.
